5 steps to look more professional

I am a firm believer in using our image strategically and intentionally.

If you follow me for some time, you already know what a powerful form of communication it is and how smart people use it to convey what they want and need, to give them that necessary boost in self-esteem and leverage their careers!

Communicating professionalism through the 3 areas of the image, which are appearance (what we wear), behavior (our gestures, posture), and non-verbal communication (tone of voice, vocabulary, speed and tone of speech, etc.) is not only important, but also effective in making you stand out for the right reasons, in creating a connection to your target audience so they will listen to what you have to say, and in being offered more opportunities for growth, collaboration and success.

So, how do you convey more professionalism through your image?

1. Remember that everything communicates!

Our image is not made of just one aspect but of a set of factors that determine the perception that others will have of us. We cannot control this 100%, of course, but we can send the right and universal signals that usually communicate what we want and need.

Anything that is out of place, such as a stain on your clothes, exaggerated makeup or inappropriate clothing, spelling mistakes, or slang, for example, can be a negative and unnecessary “noise” in your image, which will take the focus of your competence and can damage your professional reputation.

Not thinking about dress codes, who you will be with and the impression you want to convey can be a fatal mistake... So, always try to be intentional in choosing these aspects using knowledge and technique!

2. Use clothing elements in your favor

In general, darker and opaque colors, neutral tones, and solid pieces are more formal and professional, as are straight lines, less exposed skin, good quality and fit, tailored pieces, and so on.

Another tip is to always complement your looks with a 3rd element: instead of a normal 2 piece outfit, add a coat, blazer, vest, scarf, necklace, or belt to make it more polished and chic.

As always, there are no absolute rules and no one thing that works for everyone. Ideally, we can balance your style and authenticity with these and other visual elements for a harmonious and efficient result.

If you don’t know how to do that, I’m always here to help! ;)

3. Pay attention to accessories

Do you know the saying “Small things make the biggest difference”? Accessories are sooo proof of this, and we’re talking about your glasses, watch, necklace, earrings, bracelets, rings, bags, and shoes.

They are a great way to give your touch to your outfit - hello statement piece - or highlight a specific feature, making you feel more confident and beautiful. Wear them with purpose and pride! ;)

Practically, smaller and more discreet accessories tend to be more formal than bigger and “showy” ones, which is not to say that you cannot have strategic points of color and contrast, especially if you want to communicate creativity and confidence in your overall impression.

Be careful, however, not to overdo it and avoid items that can make noise or “steal” the attention of what matters: you and your amazing work!

4. Take care of yourself

Our self-esteem is so important, and it will determine how we choose to style our hair, nail color, makeup, how we take care of our mental and physical health, our posture, and so on.

At the end of the day, we want to be fresh, clean, and healthy, so we can feel confident, do our best and accomplish our goals.

Investing in your self-esteem and looking good is also a sign of self-respect and respect for others: You value their presence, and time, and show them your value, too.

In terms of office looks, a good example is that lighter, understated makeup is polished and very suitable for a formal professional environment. It can be done in less than 5 minutes every morning and offer you great results. You can even throw in a red lipstick sometimes if it’s very “you” (I love it!), but always try to balance things so it is not too much, depending on your niche and dress code.

The same thing goes for nails: they don't always need to be done, but they should be trimmed and well cared for so they don't cause negative “noise” in your image.

5. Confidence is key

Remember that your behavior also sends messages to the world about you. And he tends to speak very loudly, rsrsrs

One thing that conveys a lot of professionalism is self-confidence. After all, our body externalizes what we feel inside and, if you are empowered, this also appears through your image.

Researchers also say that confident people are more respected, tend to negotiate better, and have their opinions more accepted by peers. So, if you believe in yourself, others can too! ;)

Other aspects also contribute: a good handshake (firm, but not “overwhelming”), eye contact, upright and calm posture, a good vocabulary, active listening, politeness, and respect for others are part of your professional reputation and a sign of elegance.

Oh, and smile! Smiling generates connection and improves your mood (and the mood of those around you). It’s amazing how smiling can open doors in all areas of life, right?

Now, of course, your image does not stand alone: If you don’t have what it takes, sooner or later it will all come crashing and there’s no tool or perfect reputation that can help you then. However, if you have the competence and skills to perform your role with excellence (and I know you do!), invest in your professional image as well, and see it become another powerful ally for your success!

Cheers and see you soon,
