What is your image and what is it telling the world about you?

What we cal the personal image is the way people visually perceive each other.

It’s a form of communication and it speaks to the unconscious, creating different impressions, sensations, and memories that can be good, neutral, or bad. It is influenced by culture, beliefs, a person’s history, and values.

Our image encompasses all aspects of our non-verbal communication: our facial expression, mannerisms, posture, our tone and volume of voice, accent, and, of course, our appearance in the way we dress, our hair, choice of accessories, colors, shapes, and so on.

It is our package, our display window, our book cover. And, like them, they attract and repel different people and opportunities.

Because it is the result of the interpretation of others, we have no way of having complete control over it. However, we can manage it in a very efficient way, thinking carefully about the signals we will send with elements like style, colors, lines, shapes, changes in our posture and gestures, smiling or being more serious, and this influences also the feelings they will arise in others.

Just like marketing experts have been doing for a product or service for a long time: McDonald’s is not orange and Nike’s logo doesn’t look like a “done” by chance, as politicians don’t wear suits with blue ties because they all like it so much.

The key question, in this case, is: How do you want to be perceived and remembered?

By learning how you can influence this perception in a more concrete way using the elements of your image, you can make these interpretations less accidental. You can consistently show your qualities and differentials (what makes you, you!) to the people that matter and send a reliable and coherent message about yourself to others, opening doors and creating opportunities without saying a word.

The truth is, whether you like it or not, you are sending messages with your image at all times, and others are drawing conclusions about you based on them. Therefore, it is best to know exactly what they are and start sending the right signals according to your values, strengths, and objectives.

Your outside should be as faithful as possible to your inside, making you feel confident and drawing the attention of the right people.
